On Thursday, November 10, 2022, University of Haifa proudly awarded honorary doctorates to two inspiring individuals – renowned performance artist Marina Abramović and famed architect Moshe Safdie. Preceding the conferment ceremony, both conferees delivered outstanding lectures to packed auditoriums.

Marina Abramović is recognized for her life’s work as a daring artist and trendsetter in the field of performance art, and for being a role model and an inspiration for young artists and female artists. University of Haifa friends and supporters Mrs. Batia Shani and Mr. Doron Livnat performed the honor of administering the hooding.

Moshe Safdie, renowned architect and urban planner, is being honored for his transformative contributions to the architectural planning of several national institutions in Israel, for being an inspiration to many generations of architects and urban planners, and for his commitment and dedication to the Jewish people and the State of Israel. Longtime University of Haifa friends and supporters Mrs. Tova Sagol and Mr. Shlomo Dovrat performed the honor of administering the hooding.

“We are proud to award the University's highest honors to the leading artist in the field of performance art and one of the most inspiring artists of our time. Throughout her career, Marina Abramović has set an example as a brave and groundbreaking artist, and as an innovator who seeks to question boundaries – attributes that we at the University of Haifa admire and share."

"Moshe Safdie designed and built projects around the globe ranging from residential neighborhoods and cultural and government buildings to airports and public parks, throughout his 50-year career. In all his designs, he infused the principles of humane architecture, weaving his design language into the geography, location, and unique cultural and social fabric of the region."

A CELEBRATION OF ART
Thank you to Tova and Sami Sagol for hosting a festive reception in honor of Marina Abramović and Moshe Safdie

Longstanding friends and supporters of the University of Haifa, Tova and Sami Sagol, opened their home to welcome honorary degree recipients Marina Abramović and Moshe Safdie to the University of Haifa family. Over 100 guests attended the lavish event, which featured two singers from the Israeli Opera whom Tova has supported for more than two decades. Over the years, the Sagol family has generously supported important research initiatives at the University in neurobiology and creative arts therapies. 

Cornerstone ceremony for the Shani Family Art Gallery

A festive ceremony on the Mount Carmel campus was held to celebrate the establishment of the Shani Family Art Gallery. The ceremony was attended by Batia and Shaul Shani and members of the Shani family. "University of Haifa views art as an integral part of its social commitment to the community and the world of academia," said President Robin. "Our campus is a unique expanse where we celebrate art. The Shani Family Gallery will showcase works by emerging young artists." 

UofH marks Climate Action Day with inspiring lectures and TED talks

The Mt. Carmel Campus and Lorry I. Lokey City Campus celebrated Climate Action Day with lectures and talks on global warming risks, challenges, and opportunities. University of Haifa has made it a top priority to ensure that "sustainability" permeates all University activities including research and teaching, as well as operations*. "The greatest challenge of our time is climate change, caused by man-made greenhouse gases," said Rector Gur Alroey. "Our lives are directly affected by this existential crisis, which places the world in a state of international emergency. On Climate Action Day, we deepen our knowledge of climate change, its causes and risks, and ponder the options still open to humanity which may enable us to correct the damage before it is too late." The initiative was led by Prof. Ofer Arazy, Director of Innovation and Sustainability at UofH, in cooperation with the new Climate and Environmental Sustainability Center, headed by Prof. Shlomit Paz (Department of Geography and Environmental Studies).

*In a new global survey QS Sustainability University Rankings 2023 by World University Ranking, University of Haifa tied in the top three universities in Israel and scored 321-340 globally.
