The University of Haifa recently held its 52nd Board of Governors Meeting, welcoming a global audience of governors, friends, and supporters – both in person and virtually via Zoom. Key events included the signing of a record-breaking $50 million pledge by the Amir Family Foundation for the establishment of the Herta and Paul Amir School of Medicine. The celebration continued with the opening of the Art Gallery at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Library, featuring an exhibit by artist and philanthropist Batia Shani.
Rector Gur Alroey was officially elected as the University's 12th President, assuming the role in October 2024. He will succeed President Ron Robin, who is completing a highly successful eight-year term. Prof. Haim Bitterman shared his vision for the future School of Medicine as its incoming Dean, while Prof. Leah Peretz, Dean of the new School of Design, introduced its academic offerings.
Attendees participated in several meaningful ceremonies. These included the opening of the Amir Family Olive Grove, which marked significant family milestones and paid tribute to Captain Amir Tzur z"l, who heroically defended residents of southern Israel on October 7th. The "Swords of Iron" Ceremony honored the University's fallen soldiers and civilians, while also launching a scholarship fund to support student-reservists.
The Annual German Friends Meeting fostered connection between students and esteemed supporters. Chairwoman Sonja Lahnstein-Kandel and Honorary Chairman Prof. Manfred Lahnstein, both longtime supporters and honorary doctorate recipients, participated in the meeting with students from the Jewish-Arab Community Leadership Program and the Werner Otto Graduate Arab Women Program.
Further highlights included the inauguration of the Hecht Museum Sculpture Garden and the presentation of the first-ever Visionary Award to Mrs. Herta Amir. This award recognizes the Amir family's exceptional leadership in creating a lasting academic legacy at the University of Haifa.
