UofH scholar receives prestigious Educational Research Award | |

Congratulations to Prof. Lily Orland-Barak (Dean of Graduate Studies Authority) on being honored with the Michael Huberman Award for Excellence in Research on the Lives of Teachers from the American Educational Research Association. The award, sponsored by the Lives of Teachers Special Interest Group, is presented to those who have made outstanding contributions to understanding the life of teachers. In announcing the award, the Judges Committee noted that Prof. Orland-Barak is being recognized as a “ground-breaking researcher whose work has extended the conceptualization of teachers' expertise, life-long learning and professional development through numerous theoretical and empirical studies in both national and international contexts.” |

UofH and Rambam sign purchase agreement for advanced neuroimaging equipment to promote applied and basic research | |

The University of Haifa and the Rambam Health Care Campus are joining forces to secure an advanced magnetic resonance imaging machine (MRI) to promote applied and basic research in fields ranging from behavioral science to cognitive psychology and physical rehabilitation. The device will be made available to University researchers and Rambam clinician and scientists. At the University alone, there are more than 30 faculty members and over 150 students from four different faculties involved in interdisciplinary studies that require MRI data. They banded together to form the Interdisciplinary Neuroimaging Forum, a group that has developed a wide-ranging agenda that includes the establishment of hands-on training curriculum for MA and PhD students and a full scholarship program for postgraduates investigating aging, human memory and other cognitive processes. |

Marine scientists from UofH weigh in on Israel’s worst environmental disaster | |

The major oil spill off the coast of Israel is being called the worst ecological disaster in the country's history. Soon after the tar was first noticed on Israel's beaches, a number of researchers and students from UofH quickly mobilized to assist in the emergency clean-up operation and removed the tar by hand.
National media outlets interviewed several marine researchers from The Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences on the disaster, including Prof. Ilana Berman-Frank (Director of the School) who spoke to Israel21C about the mounting urgency to invest in early detection and monitoring systems such as satellites and remote sensing gliders and buoys. She warns that, “Once the oil has reached the shore, dealing with the damage is too late. And unless we act quickly this will happen again.” Prof. Rear Admiral (Ret.) Shaul Chorev, (Head of The Maritime Policy & Strategy Research Center and The Ezri Center for Iran & Persian Gulf Studies) told The NY Times that, “In Israel, we have maritime domain blindness… Our activities are always focused on foiling terrorists activities, but that’s not the whole picture of security in the sea.” |

Israel has the highest COVID-19 vaccination rate per capita in the world – having administered at least one dose to over half of the population within two months. The NY Times and BBC Radio interviewed Prof. Manfred Green (School of Public Health) on the implications of this achievement across different age groups. Prof. Green is a medical doctor, epidemiologist, member of the Ministry of Health's Vaccination Advisory Committee and a member of the Ministry of Health's Pandemic Response Team.

Experts from the Faculty of Education discuss the impact of COVID-19 on education | |

Dr. Shiri Lavy and Dr. Adar Ben-Eliyahu from the Faculty of Education spoke at a webinar hosted by the American Society of the University of Haifa, on the impact of online learning. Their discussion focused on how the pandemic has affected the education system, its quick adaptation to an online framework, and how to best support grade school students, their parents, and their teachers during the pandemic. UofH researcher moderates event on Israeli-Arab women in the workplace | |

Israeli-Arab women have emerged to fill positions of leadership in Israeli society, yet many challenges remain to achieve full equality. Sawsan Kheir, double-degree PhD candidate in psychology at the University of Haifa and Abo Akademi University in Finland, recently moderated a panel of leading Arab-Israeli women who offered their unique perspectives on working and succeeding in the business, academic, labor and NGO sectors. Their fascinating discussion touched on issues such as important initiatives advancing women’s rights in the Israeli-Arab sector, job opportunities during COVID-19, the presence of Arab student in higher education and the impact of the pandemic on women’s rights. Sawsan Kheir studies contemporary religiosities and received all of her degrees from the University of Haifa. The webinar was hosted by the America-Israel Friendship League. VIEW THE EVENT |
