Younes and Soraya Nazarian Library receives rare Antique Map Collection

Copies of the collection from the 16th – 17th century are now on display at the Younes and Sorays Nazarian Library.

The Richard Umansky Living Trust gifted an antique map collection to the University of Haifa. The rare collection includes over 30 artistic maps and historical atlases adorned with biblical illustrations and Christian narratives that suggest they might have been used for pilgrimages. According to Dr. Zur Shalev (Head of the Department of General History and Co-founder and Director of the Haifa Center for Mediterranean History) the historical collection dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Dr. Richard Umansky (z"l) was a pediatrician by profession, and an avid traveler, outdoorsman and historian. The American Society of the University of Haifa assisted in the delicate transfer of the collection from California to Haifa.

Here it's possible! UofH serves as an example of inclusivity, multiculturalism and co-existence

Students enrolled in the University of Haifa’s Social Mobility Program – the first of its kind in Israel – work to empower, expand, and redefine the role of Israeli higher education as an engine for change.

"Education is more than a piece of paper or license to pursue a specific set of skills; it’s a key to upward mobility, and the great equalizer between the haves and have-nots in society… With 32% of the student body comprised of Arab students, we believe that University of Haifa has a critical role to play in forming cross-cultural bridges, shaping a more just society in Israel, enabling Arab students to take leadership positions, and helping Arab graduates successfully lead communities."   Op-ed by CEO of the American Society of the University of Haifa

FINE ARTS: Hecht Museum scientists find sketches hidden in Modigliano painting

Amedeo Modigliano's "Nude with a Hat" at the University of Haifa's Hecht Museum.

As part of a sweeping forensic study of his work for an upcoming exhibit at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, scientists at the Hecht Museum uncovered three hidden sketches in a painting by celebrated 20th century Jewish Italian artist Amedeo Modigliano. Using x-ray technology, the team discovered a portrait of Maud Abrantes, a member of Modigliano's social circle. Amid attempts to bring that figure into focus, curators noticed two more silhouettes: one of a man and the other of a woman with her hair pulled up in a bun. The story was featured in major media outlets including Bloomberg and The Washington Post.

Prof. Emeritus Gershon Galil (Department of Biblical Studies) recently made headlines for deciphering the earliest dated inscription ever found in Jerusalem – a 3,500 year old ancient script on a tablet believed to have been used in voodoo ceremonies. According to Galili's translation, the Proto-Canaanite inscription singles out the “governor of the city,” with the repeated phrase, “cursed, cursed, you will surely die,” suggesting its use in ceremonies carried out by priests or other important figures in the city who were feuding with the city’s highest official.

CLIMATE CHANGE: Israel must prepare for extreme heatwave and wildfires, say UofH experts

Dr. Avi Bar-Massada (Department of Biology and Environment at University of Haifa at Oranim), a global leader in fire research, warns that the extreme heatwave experienced in southern Europe, which has seen temperatures soaring past 107°F (42°C), only stands to get worse. The region is also experiencing raging wildfires, consuming thousands of acres of land in France, Portugal and Spain. He explains, "At events like this, when everything is dry, the trees dry out and all it takes is one tiny spark to light a fire." Prof. Emeritus Haim Kutiel (Department of Geography and Environmental Studies) predicts that these events are the result of global climate change and will become more frequent and extreme, especially in the Mediterranean basin and other areas on the continent.
